Nanholme Mill is having an open weekend. The whole of the mill will be open. At No 11 we have Arc Publishing, Blott Works, General Patt’rn, and Outsiders Photography and we are open 20th and 21st May from 11 am to 6 pm. Kate Mellor will be exhibiting recent photographic works taken locally. She says of her exhibition Upper Calder Catchment Area, “ These are relics from the famous Boxing Day floods which, as you can see from its location, affected our workshop. How to describe a process that has taken an era; that becomes invisible through the length of time it has taken? Although the work seems to buy in to the pictorialism of the early pioneer photographers it is disrupted alluding to the changes that we can see happening in the environment now. The titles reference catchment data by area although it falls in the Upper Calder region. The landscapes that I make are nonetheless characteristic of the area including many of the noted features. With superimposition I have chosen to indicate that water flows through all things, even inanimate objects which is understandable to those who dwell in a wet climate. There is refraction by photography itself and furthermore by the blocking of lines leading into the depths of the landscape. Also there is often staining, further emphasizing the flow of water. The floods are becoming more frequent linking my home to worldwide events “
Charlie is showing some examples of recent work about trees for Trace and the Nanholme open weekend.
UPDATE TWO!
The exhibition is now open again until November 28th. The book has now been re-printed and is for sale in the museum shop or can be bought online.
UPDATE
The exhibition of this work was extremely popular when it was open. It is, of course, now under lockdown but you can see it on this 3D tour. Matthew Conduit has also published a book of the work which is now sold out. It is very well designed (apart from containing excellent photographers) and will doubtless be reprinted.
The project, Regeneration, documents the changes happening in Sheffield during the 1980s and was originally organised by Matthew Conduit and showed at the Untitled Gallery (now Site). The project involved the work of about twelve photographers including Anna Fox, John Kippin, John Darwell, John Davies, and Kate Mellor. Matthew Conduit has collated a new exhibition consisting of work from Regeneration and a book is being published to coincide with the show. The exhibition at Weston Park, Sheffield Museums begins this October 23rd. Due to social distancing rules you must book a visit to the gallery.

The photography exhibition “Modelling the Animal” launches at Deanclough in February 2020. Showing work are five photographers - Liza Dracup, Terence Wright, Charlotte Mellor Meecham, John Darwell, Charlie Meecham and Kate Mellor - each focusing on human-animal relationships and the visual representation of animals. Both Liza and Charlie’s work is concerned with archive materials; with Liza it is animal skins kept in museums for reference while Charlie photographs the representation of the dodo. Often the models of the dodo are physically inaccurate with parts of other birds used in their make up. Terence and Kate photograph living creatures and the way they interact through the camera with humans. Terence photographs prize birds which have been trained to pose for the camera while Kate and Guilbert collaborate at play. John and Charlotte both reference childhood, John narrates a story about his obsession with sharks and Charlotte provides a photographic study of children’s ‘cuddlies.’
