DIY at Nanholme turns a scruffy landing into a small gallery space

The entrance stairs and landing has been given new paint and smartened up with the idea of making a small exhibiting space. The vivid blue paint, while not quite Yves Klein blue, provides a fantastic backdrop for photographs while the tidy white curtains reflect light. We are hoping that someone who makes small sculptures or similar will exhibit on the table top.

At the moment Kate is exhibiting some of her experimental work as a trial. During lockdown she has been photographing the dams and the reservoirs with a pinhole camera and adding to them in photoshop. While she is happy with the dams in the valleys, the reservoirs on the tops are proving to be difficult. Nonetheless we have hung them up in the new space unframed to see if they grow on her. They’ve failed to do that, and maybe that has been the value of the space so far in helping to realise when ideas are not produced in the right way.

It could become a space to try something out in an unfamiliar space before it is exhibited in a very public venue, to see if it “works.” It is not a particularly forgiving area - it has fluorescent lighting, daylight and only room to stand back in certain places but it is a simple space where ideas do come across quite strongly.
